What’s New in Car Security Technology?

by Lalithaa

If you’re interested in car security, there are many different technologies available. Some are more effective than others, but they have drawbacks. A recent study by Trend Micro found that cars can be hacked relatively easily. The research also found that the technology used to protect cars can also be hacked.

Smartruck III is a car security technology

Using advanced technology, the SMARTRUCK III is capable of monitoring and identifying movement in remote areas and can make the work of a personal injury lawyer easier. The vehicle’s sensors detect airborne bio-hazards and can detect illegal trespassers even in total darkness. It is ideal for use by law enforcement, border patrol, and private security professionals.

GPS tracking devices

GPS tracking devices are an integral part of car security technology. The devices use satellites to provide precise location data on moving and stationary objects. They can be battery operated or plugged into the car’s battery. Currently, there are 24 satellites in the GPS constellation. Each orbit circles the Earth twice a day, providing continuous coverage of all areas on the globe. These devices are becoming increasingly popular, and the market is predicted to grow by 40 percent annually to $1 billion by 2017.

Immobilizers

Immobilizers are a type of car security technology that prevents theft. It works by sending a coded signal to the car’s engine management system (EMS) to prevent unauthorized use. Once this code is received, the engine will not start unless it receives a second security code. This device is often combined with a Smart Key fob, which has a transponder chip embedded within it. If the key is lost or stolen, the vehicle’s authorized dealer can deactivate the immobilizer and arrange a new one from the manufacturer.

Trend Micro research shows that cars can be hacked with relative ease

Despite their advanced cybersecurity capabilities, modern cars are easy targets for hackers. A wide variety of sensors, GPS systems, and in-car entertainment platforms make them an increasingly lucrative target. As more of these systems become connected, criminals have increasingly learned to piggyback on private networks to collect and use data. A large part of this problem comes from the lack of security standards across thousands of device manufacturers.

Vendor neutrality

If you’re considering making a career change from car security to another industry, you might want to consider becoming a security professional. The CompTIA Security+ certification is a vendor-neutral option and can jumpstart your career. It covers core security functions, and passing this exam will open many doors for security professionals.

Cost

There are many types of car security technology, such as alarms and immobilizers. There are also some newer and more sophisticated systems, such as GPS-based vehicle security services developed by automobile manufacturers. These systems are currently being introduced only in premium passenger cars, but are expected to reach mid-segment cars in the coming years.
